PSI Introduces New Mechanical Principles Test
Test Focuses on Basic Abilities Needed to Perform Mechanical JobsBURBANK, CALIF. (January 8, 2007) — To meet the pressing need of employers to hire qualified talent for manufacturing, production and technical jobs, PSI Services LLC, a leader in pre-employment assessment and evaluation programs, has introduced a new version of its Mechanical Principles Test (MPT).
The MPT, available in both online and pen-and-pencil formats, measures the ability to understand and work with basic physical and mechanical principles. It helps assess applicants for a wide range of jobs that involve mechanical aptitude, such as manufacturing assembly positions, operations and process management jobs involving machinery, repair and maintenance positions, construction work and firefighting.
"Our MPT was designed to improve upon older tests of mechanical comprehension by focusing on underlying job-related concepts needed in mechanical work and avoiding items that depend on specialized scientific knowledge," explained John Weiner, vice president, Products and Services, for PSI. "Material for the test was purposely selected to be fair and neutral to with respect to gender and culture."
The Mechanical Principles Test is practical to administer, consisting of 36 multiple-choice questions, and requiring only 20 minutes to complete. The test is user-friendly and can be administered in either group or individual test sessions. Available in English, the MPT can be easily adapted to other languages.
"Criterion-related validation studies conducted in three relevant applicant groups have indicated that MPT scores are predictive of job performance and training success," Weiner noted. "This means that employers can expect to see real gains in employee productivity and ROI by using the MPT as part of a hiring program," he added.
Mechanical principles tests can be used separately to assess a job candidate or in conjunction with additional assessments, Weiner said. PSI offers an extensive array of employee selection tests in addition to the MPT, each geared to help businesses find candidates who are not only best suited for the job, but who will fit into the overall organization.PSI's catalog of assessment products includes the Basic Skills Test series for hourly workers, the Employee Aptitude Survey series for a broader ranger of hourly and professional jobs, the Professional Employment Test for jobs requiring critical thinking and analytical skills, and the work attitude-measuring ViewPoint series of tests to help employers make more effective hiring decisions.
More businesses, government agencies and professional associations have been using tests to determine if applicants will be a good "fit" in the jobs for which they are being interviewed. Pre-employment tests also can determine if an applicant has the requisite skills to be successful in a particular position. Because the cost of making a "bad hire" can be extremely high, reaching thousands of dollars per lost employee, employers are relying upon tests to help select employees who will be both successful and committed to remaining on the job."Our MPT employs test items based on the concepts that are most important to succeed in a range of mechanically oriented jobs," noted PSI President Doug Walner. "A person working with machines and heavy equipment on a daily basis requires a different skill set than a person working behind a desk all day. Our MPT will help an employer better determine if a candidate is well suited for that mechanically-oriented job," he added.
